Louis-Francois Cartier founded his company in 1847 when he began making and selling beautifully detailed jewelry. After he created the first wristwatch in 1904, the brand became quite popular among royalty and aristocrats.

The jewelry lines continued to thrive throughout the 20th century, even as the company ended family ownership in 1964. By the mid-1960s, it started to sell scarves, pens and leather goods. It released its first fragrances for men and women in 1981.
